Project G(end)er

G(end)er is about empowering and curating a positive representative display of those who situate outside of the traditional gender binary and identify under the queer umbrella. Transgender and non-binary models are under-represented and excluded from most forms of mainstream media, despite making up a significant number of the population, and I felt that this is an injustice that must be challenged face-on.

This portrait series was intended to make people question the gender of those around them without referring to the default male or female binary, whilst simultaneously understanding that a person's gender is irrelevant and nobody’s business. Gender is a fluid spectrum and although it can be a part of who you are and something to take pride in, it should never be a factor that impacts on how individuals are treated.

Projection & Extras

I would love to continue my work on Project G(end)er and share the stories of trans and non-binary creatives, for a while I've been sitting on the idea of offering free shoots across the UK for individuals who have recently changed their pronouns, name and/or gender. The idea behind this is to offer free portrait sessions to those who no longer have images of themselves or ‘selfies’ that represent who they are, this could potentially help those with the difficult task of re-introducing themselves with new pronouns or a name-change online and social media profiles, as well as to their friends and families.

Many of my trans male friends shared the fear behind getting their first "male-passing" haircut and how erasing their profiles of older images made them feel cleansed. I would love to offer trans and non-binary people a set of images that they can use to "come out" to others or just to see who they are in a new light. I would not charge sitters for the shoot in any way, but ask for a small deposit to avoid inevitable no-shows, that can be either refunded or donated to an LGBTQIA+ charity of their choice .
